I Miss My Commute

I miss my commute…

The novelty of WFH has worn away, and the routine has become my new normal.  Wake up, exercise, grab coffee, start work.  Continue for 7-8 hours, or more. Close the laptop, walk 20 steps and prepare for dinner.

Frankly, I miss my commute.  I miss the cracks in the day that were just time for me.  No clients or children – just time for me.

My old commute was a short walk to the train.  The trees are always just a bit different and the morning clouds present another canvas of shapes and colors.  I’d find my window seat and listen to a podcast or news as the neighborhoods flew by.

I realize now that the commute was a precious time to open my mind and view the world with autopilot consciousness.   My mind could experience a palette of information and sensation as it became ready for the day.  The morning commute fueled alertness.  The commute home was even better, time to decompress and review.  I would reflect on the day,  tallying accomplishments, gauging effectiveness, and setting plans.  The commute home was built-in time for self care, reflection and improvement.  The train would pause, and the short walk home brought closure to the day’s work, and readiness for the precious family time ahead.

With WFH as my new reality, I need to find my new commute, finding a way to add alertness and reflection back to my routine.  Perhaps we all need the cadence and context to absorb the beauty of the world, think through our contributions, be grateful for the gifts we receive, and set a humble plan to improve.

My WFH commute begins today ---
