UGHH – I need to Rebound!!!

UGHHH! I just finished a call with a really disappointed client. I was caught off guard, never realizing what was smoldering behind the scenes. The voice in my head is in incessant: “Why didn’t you see this?”; “How could this have happened?”; “He must be wrong; he’s totally exaggerating and overly demanding”; “This is not me – it’s never happened before”; and on and on and on.  I can’t think of the work ahead because my subconscious voice has me paralyzed.

Sound familiar? Maybe you’ve been here. Inevitably, work is filled with ups and downs. The downs can happen in quick moments of any day, or across the days of the week, or in the balance of tasks/projects over time. Awareness and management of your personal emotional ebbs and flows is critical to maintaining effective interactions. Preparing a rebound mindset will have you ready to climb out of the low as quickly as possible.

Here are a few ideas for rebound mindset:

  • Misunderstandings are simply a miss; I can get better at understanding

  • Improving doesn’t mean you were all wrong; it means you’re getting better

  • People (clients) are entitled to their perspective; stay closer to it

  • Everyone makes a mistake; how I rebound is more important

  • I want to do well: I can apologize, recover and improve

  • Fall down,  then turn it around

Excellent Career Fitness® involves a rebound mindset!  Please practice your inner pep talk …
